Greater Glendale Chamber of Commerce

Basil Doc’s Pizza Brings Unique Flavor to the Chamber

Who says the east coast has all the good pizza? Basil Doc’s Pizza, which made its way to Denver all the way from the outskirts of the Yale campus in New Haven Connecticut, has been feeding Colorado pizza fans since 1996.

Originally owned by Hilary and David Allen, the flagship Basil Doc’s location was in the Washington Park neighborhood and is still there today. In 1999, Glendale Chamber member Mike Miller purchased the company from the Allen family and immediately educated himself on the entire Basil Doc’s operation.

When asked why he purchased the company, Miller says he saw “a good opportunity for expansion, great pizza and a unique business platform/model.” He also notes that “at the time of inception Basil Doc’s was truly the only all natural, traditional Neapolitan pizza in Denver.”

A veteran of the restaurant industry since 1978, Miller began his restaurant career after graduating from the University of Denver with a BSBA in Hotel & Restaurant Management. He later returned to DU to earn his Executive MBA in 1991.

Over the years he has gathered experience all over the country – including Texas and Alaska – but eventually found his way back to Denver. He worked with Jackson’s Hole Sports Grill and the Ore House. He was also responsible for creating, developing, owning and operating the original HandleBar & Grill in Wash Park.

14 years after purchasing Basil Doc’s, the company has become a force in Denver’s restaurant scene and Miller credits the unique flavors and incomparable ingredients.

“Our gourmet pizzas run the gamut, from simple combinations to exotic flavors that add a whole new dimension to the pie,” Miller explains. “We pride ourselves on custom orders and no request is too strange.”

In addition to the Wash Park location, Miller, along with his sister Lynn and her husband Anthony, has built Basil Doc’s into a popular four-location business with stores in Crestmoor, Virginia Village and the Highlands. He says that getting more involved with the Glendale community made sense and that he is looking forward to continuing the relationship.

“We joined the Glendale Chamber because of the proximity to three of our locations and because we wanted to get involved ‘in our backyard’ so to speak,” Miller says. “We are very involved with Infinity Park for the 2013 event season, along with the Four Mile Historic Park facility. I like what Glendale is doing – marching to a different drummer.”
